floral tattoo

A brand new DIY emo band that released their debut album, Approaching Bearable, in March of 2018. All of the songs were written by Alex Anderson, except "777777", the first song they wrote as a whole group. (Fun fact, Gwen Power wrote the words for it!) Lyrically raw and heartfelt, Floral Tattoo blew itself out of the water by being everything your local garage band wants to be. Each track is amazing as a standalone, while the album still manages to be a cohesive concept with a solid focus. I look forward to seeing more from them, they show incredible promise already!

freya

Not to be confused with the metal group! Freya is a musical project by Tamara Westwood, a dream pop/emo hybrid. She has released five albums, the most recent being The Fifth. She writes, records, and plays all of her songs herself, consistently putting beautiful poetry to intricate guitar work. These are songs that will take you places when you close your eyes. Tamara's vocal performance is gentle, very intimate, yet not lacking a single ounce of emotion. The Fifth is her best yet, an intense journey of falling in and out of love. If you liked Stranger Things and The Brightest Ones, but wished they would somehow combine, this is it. The Fifth smoothly spans across soft dreamo and powerful midwest emo, but by no means is it a mishmash. I highly recommend this album. You can listen to the whole thing on Bandcamp!

j-cut

High-energy happy hardcore starts a fire in your eardrums! J-Cut is the artist name of Jasper, a 17 yr old solo musician who began making music in February 2018. He has released 3 albums so far, all featuring heavy sampling, danceable beats, and catchy melodies. His skills noticeably improve with every release and I'm very excited to hear what he makes next! Krazy Toxic Summertime Jamz is my favorite release of his yet, and I highly recommend you listen to it if you like artists such as 4lung and Famitory.

the slow-goers

The Slow-Goers are a small, lo-fi emo band consisting of two members, Taimir Gore and Ben Wilson. Their sound is impressive, especially for only having two members - when I first listened, I was shocked to find they're not a full band. Their latest album, I Have to Go (the band is here and they would really like to get paid tonight) is a collection of songs they worked on writing together for about two years. It's full of energy, easy to listen to, and relatable; it feels like going to a show with your best friends, except Taimir and Ben are your new best friends. The songs couldn't be any more personal. Their sound as a group continues to get better and better, and I have to say I'm really looking forward to hearing more from them! Two albums is not enough!
